not so smokey? A brief story about tobacco as a perfume ingredient

Tobacco; a sweet, woody, masculine? perfume ingredient

Whilst the thought of tobacco may initially bring one’s memory to smokey rooms, cigars and cigarettes, in the world of perfumery the scent derived from the same species that many people may choose to light up, is slightly different. Tobacco has been around in various guises since Columbus’s expeditions, and indeed, was and still is a prized trade commodity, where the properties of the plant and the compounds contained within have uses in a vast spectrum of industries, from medicine to less healthy recreational habits.

In perfumery, tobacco as a ingredient may be derived from a number of sources; on a traditional basis this is extracted directly from the leaves of the plant which are dried in order so a solvent or absolute may be created and, after some careful refinement and extraction, a sweet, leathery and woody scent is able to be observed by the nose.

One of the remarkable qualities of tobacco in perfumery is it’s ability to transcend gender boundaries. While it may seem more traditionally associated with masculine scents, the inherent versatility of tobacco allows it to seamlessly blend with a wide range of notes, making it equally appealing in feminine, unisex, and gender-neutral fragrances. This adaptability reflects the evolving landscape of modern perfumery, where conventions are continuously challenged in pursuit of unique olfactory experiences.

In the realm of perfumery, tobacco proves that even the most unconventional ingredients can be transformed into captivating olfactory symphonies. Its journey from the tobacco fields to elegant perfume bottles showcases the artistry and ingenuity of perfumers who constantly seek to redefine the boundaries of scent. So, the next time you catch a whiff of a fragrance that tantalizingly combines smoky depth and earthy richness, you might just be experiencing the enchanting allure of tobacco in its most refined form.

The scent of tobacco in plowden & Fallow fragrances

We here at Plowden and Fallow have introduced the scent of Tobacco, derived from varying sources, as an ingredient in the fragrance profiles of both A Masquerade and Audacity Eau de Parfums. In Plowden and Fallows Audacity, Tobacco adds a more masculine undertone, perfectly lying beneath as a base from which the composition’s playful and darling citrus aromatic qualities, found in the head of the composition, rise. In Plowden and Fallow’s A Masquerade, the scent of tobacco compliments in a different way, however, it too lies in the base of the composition, from which it works in tandem with notes such as leather, rum and sandalwood to provide a sweet, mysterious and risqué base note.
