5 GENERATIONS

Plowden & Fallow's boxes being made by a 5th generation London boxmaker

The plowden & fallow ethos and finding Suppliers for our luxury British fragrance ranges

Here at Plowden & Fallow during the crafting of our products we place the notion of ‘quality’ at each and every stage of production down to minutest detail. This notion is not only applied to our raw materials and their transformation into our luxury fragrances but also our packaging.

We believe our packaging exists to tell a story, it is the outer projection of what is contained within liquid form. It was therefore of paramount importance when finding a packaging supplier that they were able to meet our stringent standards in relation to craftsman/ womanship, sustainability, heritage, and perhaps most importantly, that they possessed an overarching passion not only for their craft but also our creations.

macCarthy boxmakers: our ideal partner for ethical MANUFACTURE

Whilst many brands may outsource packaging requirements overseas, far to the East, we not only wanted to reduce transport miles, honouring our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint, but we also needed to honour our other commitments, including, the championing of hand crafted production and traditional manufacturing techniques. These factors, along with the above meant our partnership with MacCarthy & Sons was only natural.

MacCarthy & Sons based in London’s dockyards have been owned and run by the same family for 5 generations. Having been started in 1880, the business is now headed up under the watchful eye of James MacCarthy. The business has a progressive and innovative approach to box manufacture whilst retaining many traditional procedures during the construction of boxes, indeed the oldest working machine in the factory was produced in 1908 and is still going strong! Whilst some more modern equipment has become an essential tool during the manufacturing process, nearly all of the production process for Plowden & Fallow’s packaging is carried out almost entirely by hand, in the London factory, by some very skilled people who work alongside James, some of whom, have been at the factory in excess of 20 years.

Speaking about our relationship with MacCarthy and Sons, James MacCarthy said “We as a team have hugely enjoyed working with Plowden & Fallow on their perfume packaging. It felt good to be working alongside a like-minded business with a similar attention to detail and who valued our family business and traditional processes in order to produce some lovely boxes. Working on Plowden & Fallow's stunning packaging, which catches eyes throughout the factory and our visitors, is always a joy."

Our boxes are constructed from paper sourced FSC credited sources and are mostly recyclable. If you would like to know a little more about James and his factory please search for MacCarthy and Son Boxmakers in your search browser.
