Frankincense: an introduction to this luxury Ancient ingredient
One of perfumeries most ancient and well known ingredients is frankincense, used for time and millennia, or at least since the days of the Egyptians who used it as part of the embalming process. Today we still frankincense used in religious ceremonies in Catholic Churches, and it also very much remains a popular note in a perfumers libraries.
How frankincense is produced
Frankincense in its natural form is a resin collected from the Boswellia sacra tree, found growing wild or semi-cultivated in a number of countries around the globe, from Somalia, Yemen to the mountainous regions of Dhofar, Oman. The trees start producing the much sort after resin at 8-10 years of age, where it is collected by farmers who make shallow incisions in the bark of the trees from which the resin drains and is collected via containers attached to the trees, this process is commonly known as “tapping”. From there the dried golden resin is taken to be distilled into a usable oil.

Many perfumers may make use of resin in both its raw or laboratory produced forms. It is indeed a powerful ingredient that should be used with care as it may overpower other more subtle notes contained within the composition. The scent of frankincense is that of a highly aromatic, spicy sweetness with hints of pine, we have introduced this ingredient into the below fragrances in order to help develop a velvet like aromatic luxury feel to the compositions.
