Sandalwood: An Introduction

Many of Plowden & Fallow’s fragrant compositions contain undertones derived from one of the world’s most valuable trees: sandalwood. Valued for centuries across cultures, sandalwood has found a fragrant home in perfumery, religion, and even as a form of currency.

The sandalwood tree is native to East Asia. However, due to the rarity of ‘true’ sandalwood, the harvesting of traditional varieties is now tightly controlled by governments where it grows naturally. Modern production of sandalwood oil largely takes place in Australia, where sustainability concerns are less restrictive.

This remarkable species is diverse, with over 29 varieties capable of producing fragrant oil. Sandalwood trees are also hemiparasitic, meaning they rely on other plants for nutrients to grow. This unusual characteristic contributes to both the rarity and the high cost of sandalwood oil.

Harvesting Sandalwood for Perfumery

Oil-rich sandalwood is typically harvested from mature trees, often over 15 years old, as these contain the highest concentration of aromatic compounds. Once harvested, the oil is extracted through a distillation process similar in principle to that used in spirits production.

The process can take up to a week and commonly uses steam distillation. The wood is first heated, then steam is introduced to release the oils trapped within its porous structure. The steam carries the oil, which is later condensed and separated into three components: wood, water, and essential oil.

Plowden & Fallow Fragrances Containing Sandalwood

At Plowden & Fallow, sandalwood is a cherished ingredient featured in a number of compositions. Its distinctive scent is often described as soft, creamy, warm, and woody. It can either take centre stage in a fragrance or act as a subtle base note that supports the overall composition.

For those who enjoy sandalwood as a more prominent feature, we recommend exploring the woody character of Squire Jack Eau de Parfum.

Yours faithfully,
Plowden & Fallow Customer Services.
