Frankincense: An Introduction to an Ancient Luxury Perfume Ingredient
Frankincense is one of perfumery’s most ancient and well-known ingredients. Used for millennia, including by the Ancient Egyptians as part of the embalming process, frankincense remains a treasured aromatic material today.
It is still used in religious ceremonies and continues to hold an important place in the perfumer’s palette, particularly in aromatic, oriental and woody fragrance compositions.
How Frankincense Is Produced
Frankincense, in its natural form, is a resin collected from the Boswellia sacra tree. These trees grow wild or semi-cultivated in regions including Somalia, Yemen and the mountainous areas of Dhofar in Oman.
The trees begin producing resin from around 8 to 10 years of age. Farmers collect it by making shallow incisions in the bark, allowing the resin to drain and harden. This process is commonly known as tapping. Once dried, the golden resin can be distilled into a fragrant oil.
Frankincense in Fragrance
In perfumery, frankincense may be used in natural or laboratory-produced forms. It is a powerful ingredient and must be used carefully, as it can easily overpower more delicate notes.
The scent of frankincense is highly aromatic, resinous and spicy, with a gentle sweetness and hints of pine. It can bring depth, warmth and a velvet-like aromatic richness to a fragrance composition.
