Do Perfumes Expire?
Does Perfume Expire?
Perfume has captivated the senses for centuries. A carefully chosen fragrance can evoke memories, set a mood, and add confidence to the day. However, perfumes do not last forever. So, does perfume expire?
This guide explains perfume longevity from the perspective of Plowden & Fallow products. For fragrances from other brands, always refer to the manufacturer’s guidance.
Does Perfume Have an Expiry Date?
Plowden & Fallow perfumes do not carry a fixed stamped expiry date in the same way as food or medicine. However, this does not mean they last indefinitely.
Our fragrances are subject to a 36-month period after opening. Once opened, the product should be used or disposed of within 36 months, in line with cosmetic safety requirements.
What Affects How Long Perfume Lasts?
The lifespan of a perfume depends on several factors, including the ingredients, packaging, and how the bottle is stored.
1. Ingredients
Perfumes are complex blends of fragrance oils, aroma compounds, alcohol, and stabilising ingredients. Top notes usually evaporate more quickly than heart and base notes, while natural materials such as essential oils may oxidise over time.
2. Storage Conditions
Heat, light, and humidity can all affect a fragrance. To help preserve your perfume, store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and temperature changes.
3. Bottle Cap and Seal
Always replace the original cap after use and keep the bottle tightly closed. This helps reduce evaporation and limits exposure to air.
Signs Your Perfume May Have Gone Bad
Although perfume does not always expire suddenly, there are signs that a fragrance may have deteriorated:
- Altered scent: If the perfume smells noticeably different from when purchased, the formula may have changed.
- Change in colour: Natural ingredients can darken or change colour over time, but a significant colour change may indicate deterioration.
- Skin reaction: If a fragrance causes irritation or discomfort, discontinue use.
How to Store Perfume Correctly
To keep your Plowden & Fallow fragrance in the best possible condition, store it:
- In a cool, dry place
- Away from direct sunlight
- Away from bathrooms or humid environments
- With the cap securely replaced after each use
Conclusion
Perfume does not last forever, but with proper storage, a high-quality fragrance can remain in good condition for a considerable period. Plowden & Fallow fragrances are produced using carefully selected raw materials and quality packaging, helping them remain stable when cared for correctly.
Once opened, Plowden & Fallow perfumes should be used within 36 months.
