JUNIPER A BOTANICAL FOR FRAGRANCES, NOT JUST GIN

When we mention Juniper what will spring into most people’s minds is that “post 6 o’clock gin”. Whilst here and Plowden & Fallow, we also like the odd gin, we admire Juniper for it’s olfactory qualities, perhaps more than it’s use in alcohol….well, maybe not, depends on what time of the day you catch us.

The juniper shrub is a remarkable species, often found throughout Europe, in particular the eastern regions of Europe, clinging to many a rocky outcrop, or higher altitude areas with well draining soils. As with many fragrant botanicals, in order to extract the powerful raw oil contained within a material, a process of steam distilled is utilised. However, this may only occur after a period of ageing, with juniper berries this is normally at least 3 years.

jUNIPER fragrances: an androgynous perfume ingredient

Once in its fragrant oil form, juniper is a much prized ingredient to perfumers, providing a fresh peppery woody note that is well known for providing a composition with an exciting aromatic edge, although, this ingredient must be used with care due to its powerful qualities which may mask other more subtle botanicals within a given fragrance profile.

We here at Plowden & Fallow incorporate the spicy and fresh scent of Juniper into a few of our compositions to provide that exhilarating complimentary edge. It is also noted that the ingredient is often utilised in many unisex perfumes which are very much becoming ‘in trend’ in modern perfumery.
