Plowden & Fallow’s 9 Tips for Smooth, Bump-Free Skin post shave

Shaving is a grooming ritual for many, but it can for more sensitive individuals comes with a not-so-welcome side effect: irritation. The redness, itching, and razor bumps can be a real pain. Luckily, there are several ways to reduce shaving irritation and enjoy smoother skin. Here we have Plowden & Fallows top tips for achieving a comfortable and hopefully less irritating shaving experience.

1. Start with Proper Prep:

Before you even think about reaching for the razor, take the time to prepare your skin. The best way to do this is by taking a warm shower or using a warm, damp towel on your face. This helps soften the hair, making it easier to cut. It also opens up your pores, reducing the risk of ingrown hairs.

2. Use a Quality Razor:

Invest in a good quality razor with a sharp blade. Disposable razors can often cause more irritation due to their dull blades. If you're using a cartridge razor, make sure to change the blades regularly. Dull blades can tug at the hair, leading to irritation. Plowden & Fallow’s range of British made razors and brushes can be found by clicking here.

3. Shave in the Right Direction:

Always shave in the direction of hair growth, not against it. Shaving against the grain can cause the hair to get trapped below the skin's surface, leading to ingrown hairs and razor bumps. For most people, this means shaving downward on the face and legs and upward on the neck.

4. Use Shaving Cream or Gel:

Don't skip the shaving cream or gel. It acts as a barrier between the razor and your skin, reducing friction and preventing irritation. Look for products that are designed for sensitive skin if you're prone to irritation. We here at Plowden & Fallow are very proud of our range of traditional shaving creams; formulated with essential oils for all skin types, our shaving creams should make razors glide. 5. Keep your razor Clean:

Rinse your razor frequently during your shave to prevent clogging. A clogged razor can cause tugging, which can lead to irritation. After you're done, rinse the razor thoroughly and store it in a dry place.

6. Exfoliate Regularly:

Consider incorporating some light exfoliation into your skincare routine to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.

7. Moisturize Post-Shave:

After you've finished shaving, be sure to apply a soothing, alcohol-free moisturizer. This will help lock in moisture and reduce dryness and irritation. Surprise, surprise! Plowden & Fallow have you covered in this domain in addition. Our range of aftershave balms contain a variety of nourishing ingredients along with the addition of vitamin E, to help reduce inflammation, smooth skin and lock in moisture. Our range of aftershave balms can be found here.

8. Avoid Tight Clothing:

If you've just shaved your legs or underarms, avoid tight clothing that can rub against your skin and cause irritation. Loose-fitting, breathable fabrics are your best choice.

9. Skip the Razor on Irritated Skin:

If you already have razor burn or irritation, give your skin a break. Shaving over already irritated areas can make the problem worse, or even potentially, in extreme cases, cause infection. Wait until your skin has healed before shaving again.

We hope our top tips provide some food for thought!

Yours faithfully,
