THE MASCULINE ROSE: Geranium in plowden & fallow perfumes

Geraniums as a perfume ingredient

the geranium flower

The Geranium is a well known and loved British flower; indeed there are several hundred sub species and many millions are planted annually in the UK up and down the country. The British love affair with this species of flower dates back several hundred years, although the flower, it is thought, has been in the UK in some forms since the 1600’s as part of many historic botanical collections. It is however, thought to be mainly native to the regions of subtropical Southern Africa.

The geranium in perfumery

The Geranium is known to many to be the masculine brother to the Rose and indeed, in perfumery, or in the gardens throughout the world, the smell is unmistakable and fairly unique. Between the subspecies of the plant, subtle olfactory differences in the notes present, may be observed; from full floral scents to minty, or chocolate type notes can be seen in some species of the flower. Plowden and Fallow use Geranium in a number of compositions, to include Squire Jack and Audacity, with the raw scent of the geranium being derived from a number of sources. The addition of this ingredient perfectly balances more feminine characteristics that may be present in any given Plowden & Fallow fragrance’s profile, bringing the composition as a whole back into a more gender neutral center.

Yours faithfully,
