the Journey to Cotswold Lavender
Embark on a picturesque journey just a short drive from Plowden & Fallow's offices to Cotswold Lavender, a charming lavender farm owned and managed by Charlie, a third-generation farmer. At Plowden & Fallow, our commitment to reducing environmental impact leads us to minimize road miles and collaborate with suppliers who share our environmental ethos, in addition, we ensure our fragrance oil suppliers overseas adhere to socially responsible practices. Cotswold Lavender, established in 1999, stands out as a preferred supplier for our Lavender shaving cream, thanks to its heritage, quality oil production, and idyllic location.
The Ideal Setting for Lavender Cultivation: The Cotswolds
Discover the secrets behind Cotswold Lavender's thriving lavender fields nestled in the rolling Cotswold countryside. The well-draining limestone soils and abundant sunlight hours create the perfect conditions for lavender cultivation. Harvesting takes place from late July into August, using specialized farm machinery—a converted forage harvester—that not only collects the lavender but also prunes the crop for optimal winter conditions. The harvested lavender travels directly from the fields to the on-site distillery, powered by rainwater, where the essential oil extraction process unfolds without the use of chemicals.
A Centuries-Old Distillation Process
Experience the time-honored distillation process at Cotswold Lavender. Steam generated inside the distillery container, heated to approximately 100 degrees Celsius, causes the lavender oil pores to erupt and rise with the steam into a collection funnel. The condenser then cools the steam, separating it into a unique oil and water mix. This chemical-free extraction method preserves the essence of lavender in a way that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
