Plowden and Fallow’s A Masquerade transports you into another silky, alluring and aromatic world. This is unisex fragrance we are very proud of and a scent that we feel contains ample excitement, eccentricity and olfactory gratification. Our perfumer has carefully created this aromatic masterpiece by placing forbidden fruity notes such as blackberry and raspberry above base notes with ample romantic substance such as leather, rum and tobacco. The resulting scent is our interpretation of this secret, mysterious and risqué event that is a masquerade ball.
The theme behind the fragrance: The masquerade ball
The roots of Masquerade balls are contained within the late 15th century and particularly within the 16th century renaissance era in Italy. These balls started as elaborate events for the upper classes of society and, for the age, these parties were totally excessive with many participants able to indulge to the fullest extent whilst masking their true identity with costumes, the centrepiece being the face covering. It wasn’t until the early 17th century that these events managed to infiltrate British society, via the introduction of a travelling Swiss Count. It was here that they became a regular occurrence in the likes of London’s pleasure gardens. These great balls were often staged at times of celebration and would be frequented by a large cross section of society. Despite the hefty price tag attached to a ticket, many people would save up month’s of earnings for the chance to attend these prestigious events where identity and wealth would be masked behind the shrouds of opulent costume. As can be imagined at the time, these events were seen by some to be scandalous and immoral. However, due to anonymity afforded by the dress code, these balls continued to have an alluring pull on a cross section of British society and even in a more subtle way they continue to do so today.
